Emerging HIT Trend

INTEROPERABILITY: The National Physician Services (NPS) researches how existing and emerging trends in information technology (especially interoperability) plays a role in the healthcare industry. In early 2019, Health Level Seven released the fourth iteration of their data program called Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FIHR). FIHR is making exchange of patient data, diagnoses, and record of medical services between healthcare systems effective and efficient. It is important to know that both providers and vendors are starting to develop their own application programming interfaces that will improve data sharing between healthcare organizations. According to Burkett (2019),"eventually, providers will consistently have access to a complete patient profile that includes environmental, social, and financial data".

Future HIT Trends

AUGMENTED REALITY:
As health information technology (HIT) is advancing, Augmented Reality (AR) is going to be very central to the medical field as the rise of augmented reality products are already emerging in the market. The healthcare industry will evolve and some changes that would occur is overlapping medical information with technology. AR can provide a hands-free, cost efficient/time-efficient approach for doctors to treat patients, teach medical students, and react quickly in emergency situations ("5 Technology Trends Impacting Healthcare", 2020). AR, for example, guides surgical students with the use of overlays for the circulatory system to guide them during procedures providing a level of interactivity not available in a traditional learning environment. The use of "smart glasses" benefits physicians of seeing patient vital statistics, medications prescribed, and health symptoms without having to consult a patient chart.

ADVANCES IN IOT:
The concept of using the Internet of Things (IoT) in health care is not a new one, but the next wave of IoT technology promises even more benefits. Miniaturization and implants are examples of IoT that healthcare providers can use to manage pain in patients with chronic conditions and detect disease by monitoring the body’s immune system. One company, called Openwater is developing a device that can provide a scan/MRI-level view into the wearers brain and body so healthcare providers can better diagnosis and treat medical conditions. Openwater believes such a system has the potential to help practitioners improve patient care, as they envision future iterations will be able to:
“…ultimately both read images and guide healthcare professionals in performing surgery, providing targeted therapy or prescribing medications" ("5 Technology Trends Impacting Healthcare", 2020).
